Pirates sweep past Long Beach

LONG BEACH -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team headed up to Long Beach City College for a matchup with the Vikings on Friday and headed back home victorious with a 5-0 win.

It was smooth sailing for the Pirates (2-0) as all five duos picked up straight-set wins with little drama to show.

At No. 1, the team of Alanna Shields and Sophia Solo took care of business with a 21-13, 21-11 win, while at No. 2, Summer Hanks and Brisa Zapata-Reaves rolled to a 21-10, 21-7 win.

It was more of the same at No. 3 as Sara Enright and Rachel Blair survived a little scare in the opening set, but still prevailed, 21-18, 21-7. The No. 4 team of Alexandra Salinas and Lexy Mendoza cruised to a 21-10, 21-8 win, while at No. 5, Paige Cutwright and Emily Payne completed the sweep with a 21-4, 21-7 victory.

Coast will head to El Camino on Thursday, Feb. 24 to take on the Warriors, beginning at 12 p.m.
