Newsom named SCFA Player of the Week

COSTA MESA -- Orange Coast College quarterback Jon Newsom has been named the Southern California Football Association's Player of the week for the Southern Conference after leading the Pirates to a 55-48 win over Saddleback College on Saturday night.

Newsom -- a 6-foot-1, 200-pound sophomore from Trabuco Hills HS -- totaled 461 yards of total offense to lead the Pirates' offense. He threw for 376 yards and five touchdowns and also rushed for another 85 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries.

In addition, teammate and running back Larenzo Williams was named the Southern Conference's Special Teams/All-Purpose Player of the Week for the Pirates.

Williams rushed for 95 yards on 23 carries, caught three passes for 42 yards and a touchdown and also threw a 73-yard touchdown pass en route to the victory.
