Pirates shut down Chargers, 16-4

COSTA MESA -- It was a standout performance on both sides of the pool as the Orange Coast College men's water polo team cruised to a 16-4 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Cypress College on Wednesday at the OCC Aquatics Pavilion.

While the Pirates (10-7, 3-1 in the OEC) put up crooked numbers in every quarter, the OCC defense and goalie Ethan Harris (nine saves), held the Chargers (8-6, 1-3) to just one goal in each quarter, controlling the action from the opening possession.

Julian Cassel-Cornet had four goals, while Ryan O'Donovan added three goals and two assists for Coast. Nathan Jones tossed in a pair of goals, while seven different Pirates -- Dane Howell, Alexander Pezold, Ethan Rose, Jacob Muller, Trenton Toma, Aiden Morris and Matthew Grudichak -- each found the back of the net once.

OCC used a pair of 4-1 quarters to grab an 8-2 advantage in the first half, then poured it on in the third, outscoring the Chargers 6-1 to grab a comfortable 14-3 advantage before playing things out in the fourth.

The Pirates will host Westcliff University on Friday at 1 p.m. before taking part at the Long Beach City College mini tournament on Saturday.
