Pirates pick up wins over Riverside, ELAC

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team picked up a pair of wins at the Golden West College Tournament, defeating Riverside City College 15-7 and East Los Angeles, 20-3.

After a back-and-forth first half, the Pirates (9-1) pulled away from the Tigers (8-6) in the third quarter by outscoring the Tigers, 5-0 to grab an 11-5 advantage.

Destiny Hernandez led the OCC offense with four goals, while Rachel Sherman added three goals and a team-best four assists. Faith Cuevas and Journey Werner each threw in two goals, while solo tallies were turned in by Kendall Chrisman, Alex Arriero, Delaney Lewellyn and Kayla Yamamoto.

In goal, Annabelle Sherman was outstanding, picking up 13 saves to preserve the win.

It was a runaway matchup against the Huskies as OCC rolled to a 20-3 win. Coast outscored ELAC 10-1 in the opening quarter and never looked back.

A trio of Pirates -- Arriero, Elizabeth Wilkinson and Alaire Thomas -- each scored three goals, while Werner and Chloe Wilber each scored twice. In all, TWELVE different Pirates scored goals against the Huskies.

That goal total was more than enough for goalie Taylor McGrath, who allowed just three goals with nine saves in the win.

Coast will return to action at home against Riverside, beginning at 4 p.m.
