Pirates take two more on the beach

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Even the warm temps couldn't stop the Orange Coast College beach volleyball team from winning as the Pirates posted a pair of 5-0 wins over Cypress and Santa Ana on Friday at the Newland Courts.

In the opening match against the Dons, Coast was led by the teams of Rachel Blair/Brisa Zapata-Reaves (21-13, 21-13), Summer Hanks/Sara Enright (21-14, 21-9) and Lexy Mendoza/Paige Cutwright (21-12, 21-2). The Pirates picked up the other two wins by way of forfeit.

It was more of the same for the Pirates (11-0, 7-0 in the Orange Empire Conference) against the Chargers with straight-set wins coming from Blair/Zapata-Reaves (21-10, 21-16), Hanks/Enright (21-14, 21-4), Mendoza/Cutwright (21-14, 21-13), Alanna Shields/Sophia Sola (26-24, 21-18) and Emily Payne/Izzy Duchaine (21-11, 21-12).

Friday's win over the Chargers helped push OCC's lead in the OEC-Western Division standings up to two matches over Cypress (3-2) with just three matches remaining.

The Pirates will travel to Golden West College to take on the host Rustlers and Santa Ana in a tri-match, beginning at 10 a.m.
