Pirates win third straight, take 3-of-4 from Hornets

FULLERTON -- It wasn't a great start to the season, but it was a fantastic finish to last week's series as the Orange Coast College baseball team regrouped and won 3-of-4 against Fullerton College, including a doubleheader sweep at FC on Friday.

In the opening game (nonconference), the Pirates earned a 9-6 win as Tyler Weaver led the Coast offense by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Garrett Bevacqua launched a home run and scored three runs, while Drew Baltruweit and Garret Barto each recorded a pair of hits and each drove in a run for Coast.

In the second game (Orange Empire Conference), the Pirates jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first six innings and cruised to an 11-3 triumph. Cary Arbolida went 3-for-5 with two RBI came off the bench to provide a 2-2, one-run performance at the plate. In all, Coast (3-1, 2-1 in OEC) pounded out 14 hits and used discipline at the plate (six walks) to help produce enough run support for the Pirate pitching staff.

In fact, it was MORE than enough for OCC starter Kelly Austin, who pitched eight strong innings and allowed just two runs on six hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts in his 2021 debut.

Coast will open up a four-game series this week against Irvine Valley College on Tuesday at Wendell Pickens Field, beginning at 2 p.m. Once again, no spectators are allowed at this time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you for your understanding and coorporation.
