Pirates go 2-1 at WLAC Tournament

CULVER CITY -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team continued its fine play with a 2-1 record at the West Los Angeles College "Wild West Shootout" this weekend with a loss to Long Beach City College (101-93) and wins over L.A. Valley (83-66) and Barstow (119-77).

Coast (7-2) definitely lived up to the tournament's moniker, averaging 101 points over the three games. Saturday's 119 points was the most scored by an OCC men's basketball team in 53 years when the Pirates scored a school-record 127 against El Camino during the 1969-70 season.

Against the Vikings on Thursday, the Pirates picked up 23 points from Jydon Hall and 19 from Logen Howard. Off the bench, Nikko McNeal came up big with 15 points and five rebounds, while Julian Daaboul tossed in 12 points and eight rebounds.

The defense clamped down a bit more on Friday as the Pirates pulled out an 83-66 win over L.A. Valley Colllege. Howard again was strong with 24 points, while Sam Hunter added 19 points and Hall tossed in 12 points and five steals. The OCC defense forced 28 turnover and limited the Monarchs to just 42 shot attempts for the entire game (61 for the Pirates).

Trailing 24-16 midway through the first half, Coast went on an 18-3 run on the Monarchs to grab the lead for good. In the second half, with OCC holding onto a one-point lead (54-53), Coast ripped off a 23-9 run to pull away and claim victory.

OCC made it two straight in the tournament with a 119-77 win over Barstow. Howard led the way with 25 points, while Hunter added 19. The 42-point win was the largest margin of victory for the Pirates since the 1987-88 season, when Coast topped East L.A. College, 118-72.

The Pirate road show continues on Friday as OCC travels to Miramar College to take on the Jets, beginning at 5 p.m.
