Pirates complete season sweep over Lasers

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team pulled off the 2-for-2 sweep over Orange Empire Conference rival, Irvine Valley, with a 65-58 home win over the Lasers on Monday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Jydon Hall had 23 points and six steals for the Pirates (13-8, 5-4 in the OEC), who swept the Lasers (4-17, 0-9) for the first time since the 2004-05 season. Logen Howard added 15 points, while Sam Hunter added 10 points and six rebounds.

For IVC, Luke Farrington led the way with 21 points, while Christian Griffin added 11.

It was a chilly start to the night for the Pirates as they fell behind 13-4 over the first eight minutes of play. Farrington nailed a pair of 3-pointers early on to put the Pirates in a first-half hole.

But Coast slowly chipped away at the deficit and six minutes later, a 16-7 Pirate run evened the score at 20. OCC capped off the first half with a 14-8 run to grab a 34-28 lead after 20 minutes of play.

The Pirates never lost that lead the rest of the night as the lead hung around double digits for the entire second half. The Lasers pulled to within six with 5 minutes left to play, but never got any closer the rest of the night.

OCC's relentless pressure defense got the best of the Lasers in stretches of the game as the Pirates forced 25 turnovers and turned those into 21 points of their own.

Irvine Valley stayed close with effective 3-point shooting, hitting eight treys on the night, but Coast made that up in other areas of the game.

The win keeps the Pirates within one game of Cypress and Riverside for second place in the OEC standings, with Fullerton leading the way at 9-0. Coast will host both of those teams this week, including Cypress on Wednesday (6 p.m.) and Riverside on Friday (7 p.m.).
