Young tops field at OEC Multi-Event Championship; Johnson takes third for OCC women

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Orange Coast College was well represented on both the men's and women's side of things at the 2022 Orange Empire Conference Multi-Event Championships on Wednesday and Thursday, hosted by Golden West College.

On the men's side, OCC's Tyler Young won the OEC decathlon with 5,857 points, while Pirate teammate Cody LaClaire finished third with 2,849 points. 

On the women's side, Whitney Johnson earned the bronze medal in the heptathlon with a total of 2,579 points, while teammate Verna Malo was close behind with a fourth-place total of 2.520 points.

Young earned SIX first-place performances in the two-day, 10-event decathlon, winning the long jump (20-feet, 5-inches), the high jump (5-8), the 110-meter hurdles (16.15 seconds), the discus throw (90-2), the pole vault (13-3/4) and the javelin throw (142-6). He was runner-up in the 100 (11.66), the shot put (27-8), the 400 (52.78) and the 1,500 (4:50.56).

LaClaire came through with runner-up performances in the 110 hurdles (20.36) and the pole vault (8-5 1/2) to earn his third-place spot for the Pirates.

Johnson posted a runner-up finish in the 200 with a time of 27.99 seconds and was also second in the high jump (4-2 1/4). She also earned a third-place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:40.09.

Malo was a steady force throughout the heptathlon with top-five performances in all seven events, including a pair of runner-up scores in the javelin (91-1) and the long jump (15-0).
