Pirates pull away from Patriot Club, 11-7

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team used a four-quarter rally to earn an 11-7 win over The Patriot Club on Thursday night inside the OCC Aquatics Pavilion.

The Patriot Club -- an 18-under squad from one of the top nationally-ranked clubs, located in Irvine and coached by former OCC assistant coach Aaron Arias -- gave the Pirates a stern test throughout the night, but Coast used a 5-0 run over the final 4-plus minutes of play to earn the victory.

A back-and-forth battle saw Coast trailing, 7-6 with 4:36 remaining in the contest before Coast ripped off the final five goals by five different Pirates to secure the victory.

After a goal by Finley Munchoff evened the score at 8-8 with 3:49 remaining, a pair of 5-meter goals by Hayden Clark and Emma Willis helped pad OCC advantage to 9-7. From there, goals by Layla Vargas and Alyssa Zettlemoyer sealed the deal for Coast as they kept The Patriot Club off of the scoreboard over the final 4:21 of play.

Clark, Vargas and Munchoff each had two goals for the Pirates (10-5), while in goal, Savannah Pena had another solid performance with 10 saves to earn the win for Coast.

The Pirates will return to the OCC Aquatics Pavilion on Wednesday for an Orange Empire Conference matchup with Saddleback College, beginning at 4:15 p.m.
