Pirates claim OEC West crown with wins over Dons, Rustlers

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Step 1 of the 2022 journey for the Orange Coast College women's beach volleyball team is complete as the Pirates captured the Orange Empire Conference's Western Division with a pair of 5-0 wins over Santa Ana and Golden West on Friday at the Newland Courts.

It is the first outright conference title in the brief history of the Pirate beach volleyball program as the Pirates improved their unbeaten record to 13-0 overall, 9-0 in the OEC West. This year, the Pirates have played in a total of 65 head-to-head matches and have won 62 of them.

On Friday, it was more of the same for OCC as they rolled easily past the shorthanded Dons and Rustlers. Coast played in three matches against SAC and picked up wins from Rachel Blair/Brisa Zapada-Reaves (21-8, 21-9), Alanna Shields/Sophia Sola (21-6, 21-7) and Summer Hanks/Sara Enright (21-17, 21-11). Coast win the final two matches by forfeit.

Against the Rustlers, the Pirates continued to roll, with wins from Blair/Zapada-Reaves (21-8, 21-10), Shields/Sola (21-6, 21-8), Hanks/Enright (21-6, 21-6) and Lexy Mendoza/Paige Cutwright (21-19, 21-12). OCC won the fifth match by way of forfeit.

OCC will wrap up the regular season at the Newland Courts against Fullerton College on Friday, beginning at 10 a.m.
