With over 25 years of coaching experience at Orange Coast College, longtime indoor volleyball head coach Chuck Cutese was the logical choice to take over the newly-former Pirates' sand volleyball program.

In their first year as a California Community College Athletic Association's official sport, the Pirates did not disappoint, going 7-5 overall and advancing to the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

It was a sport that began at OCC at the club level in 2012 and the response was strong right from Day 1. Within the first year, the number of California community college club sand volleyball teams doubled in size and when the CCCAA announced that the sport would become a sanctioned sport, Cutenese began his run as head coach of the Pirates.

Coast had a pair of teams -- Danielle Boyette and Sierra Brown as well as Lehua Alama-Jordan and Danyelle Brown -- reach the state quarterfinals and as the sport and interest continues to grow, look for Cutenese's Pirates to continue to improve and compete with the best teams in the state.

In addition to his coaching duties with the sand volleyball program, Cutenese has been the head indoor volleyball coach for Coast for the past 24 years, winning three championships as a coach (2009, 2006, 2005). He was also the men's volleyball coach from 1993-2006 and won one state title with the Pirates as a coach (1994) and also captured a state crown for the Pirates as a player, back in 1987.
