Pirates blanked by Tigers

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College baseball team had "one of those days" on Saturday as the visiting Riverside Tigers blanked the host Pirates, 12-0 at Wendell Pickens Field.

Facing a team that entered Saturday's game with a .208 team batting average, the Pirate pitching didn't do themselves any favors as they combined to walk five batters, hit five batters and balked five different times.

The Tigers (13-6, 3-2 in the Orange Empire Conference) took advantage of the OCC pitching misfortunes and scored 11 runs on just 10 hits, scoring 10 runs in the middle three innings of the game to blow things wide open.

The David Schuknecht ripped a three-run home run to right in the top of the sixth and finished with four RBI to lead the RCC offense. Chase Cuckovich and Kenny Matthews each had two-run hits for the Tigers, while Daniel Arellano added a hit and three runs scored.

The scoring barrage made things easier for starter Edgar Gomez (4-1), who pitched seven shutout innings to earn the win. He allowed just five hits, walked one and struck out six.

Kyle Dowdy (1-1) took the loss for the Pirates after giving up six runs over 3 2/3 innings.

The Pirates were shut out for just the second time in 111 games, dating back to 2010.

OCC will return to action on Tuesday at home against Saddleback, beginning at 2 p.m.
