Team effort lifts Pirates to 11-0 win over Cougars

SANTA CLARITA -- After a frustrating loss on Tuesday, the Orange Coast College baseball team took that frustration out on College of the Canyons on Wednesday, blanking the host Cougars, 11-0, in a nonconference matchup.

Coast (5-2) snapped its modest two-game losing streak in a BIG way, pounding out 20 hits, while Pirate starter David Hill improved to 3-0 with six innings of three-hit ball and nine strikeouts.

Relievers Dominic Purpura, Jason Broussard and Tanner Murphey preserved the shutout with a scoreless inning of work each. Coast struck out 15 Cougar batters throughout the contest.

Tommy Bell tied an OCC record held by many with a five-hit afternoon, going 5-for-6 with a double, triple, two runs and two RBI. Cody Nulph went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and one RBI and Jake Thumm and Greg Espinosa each had two hits, two runs and one RBI.

After a pair of scoreless innings, the Pirates came alive with five runs in the third and added a pair of runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to put the game away.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday with a doubleheader at College of the Desert, beginning at 12 p.m.
