Pirates bounce back with solid win over Vikings

LONG BEACH -- The Orange Coast College baseball team quickly shook off a minor hitting slump in a big way, topping host Long Beach, 12-5, on Thursday, in a nonconference matchup.

The win for the Pirates (11-2) caps off a three-game, away-home-away sweep over the Vikings (5-5), outscoring LBCC 30-7 along the way.

The biggest producer for Coast against Long Beach has been sophomore Travis Moniot, who continued his onslaught on the Vikings' pitchers by going 2-for-6 with a triple and three RBI. The University of Arizona-bound shortstop went a combined 7-for-13 with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, five runs and eight RBI against LBCC this season.

Daniel Hawkins went 2-for-3, including a home run and three RBI, Nolan Powers added a double, two singles, two runs and an RBI and Chris Ceballos slugged a home run and went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.

The 16-hit attack included seven extra-base hits for the Pirates, which paved the way for Kyle Robeniol to collect his third win of the season without a loss. The sophomore lefty allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts over five innings. Doug Magee pitched a stellar three shutout innings of relief, allowing two hits, no walks and two strikeouts.

Coast flexed its muscles early on as a solo home run by Hawkins and a two-run shot by Ceballos put the Pirates in front, 3-0, in the top of the second.

Long Beach made it 3-2 before Moniot's three-run triple to right-center extended Coast's lead to 6-2.

It stayed a four-run lead for Coast (8-4) until the ninth, when the Pirates broke it open with four more runs, highlighted by an RBI-double by Walker Keller and an RBI-double by Domenic Donato.

The Pirates will return to Wendell Pickens Field on Saturday as they host College of the Canyons, beginning at 12 p.m.
