Pirates swept by Rustlers with 7-2 loss

COSTA MESA -- Spring Break this week became Spring Broke for the Orange Coast College baseball team as the Pirates fell to Golden West on Saturday, 7-2, at John Altobelli Park, giving the Rustlers a three-game sweep of this week's series.

It is the first three-game sweep from any OEC opponent against the Pirates since the 2016 season when Saddleback took three in a row and the first GWC sweep over OCC in 18 years, dating back to the 2004 season.

OCC (14-14, 4-8) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI-double off the bat of Isaiah Morales, but the Coast batters struggled to get key hits in the next two innings, keeping the Rustlers in the game early.

After three scoreless innings, the Rustlers (17-12, 5-7) came to life in the fourth and scored six runs to take the lead for good. The big blow came off the bat of Gunnar Magrann, who capped off the fourth-inning scoring with a three-run home run to right.

Logan Jackson, who finished with three hits, clubbed a solo home run in the sixth, but that would be it for the Pirate offense for the remainder of the game.

The Pirate bullpen of Troon Eakin, Oscar Villareal, Jake Covey and Sean Bolin held the Rustlers to just one run on three hits over the final five innings, but GWC starter Johnnie Valdez Jr (4-1) held Coast to just two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over seven innings.

Coast returns to action on Tuesday at home against Cypress, beginning at 2 p.m. Game 2 of next week's series takes place at Cypress College on Thursday at 2 p.m. with the finale back at OCC on Friday, at 1 p.m.
