Pirates snap skid with 7-3 win over Chargers

CYPRESS -- It's "must-win" time for the Orange Coast College baseball team and on Thursday, the Pirates found a way to get it done with a 7-3 victory over Cypress College.

Starting pitcher Chase Rousselo pitched four effective innings, allowing just two runs on five hits before closer Matt Maloney stretched out his work and allowed no runs on three hits with five strikeouts over the final 4 1/3 innings to pick up the win.

Coast trailed 2-0 early before RBI-hits by Garrett Bevacqua and Alex Talamante evened the score in the top of the fifth. Cameron Mahaffy scored on one of six Cypress errors later that inning, putting OCC up, 3-2.

A Noah Karliner in the bottom of the fifth pulled the Chargers even at 3, but Coast responded with solo runs in the sixth and eighth innings before pulling away with a pair of runs in the ninth.

OCC took advantage of seven walks and six Charger errors and managed to hold the state's eighth-best hitting team to just three runs on nine hits.

Jordan Ku went 2-for-5 with two runs, while Alec Gomez kept his hot hitting going with two this a run and an RBI. Talamante reached base three times and drove in two for the afternoon.

Game three of this week's series takes place on Friday at OCC, beginning at 1 p.m.
