Pirates prepare for Saturday matchup with Vikings

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College football team continues its 2023 season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. divisional matchup with Long Beach City College at LeBard Stadium.
FOR THE PIRATES -- It was another rough day at the office for Pirates as they fell to rival Golden West 58-9 in the annual Battle of the Bell Game on Saturday night at LeBard Stadium. Coast avoided the shutout thanks to an early fourth-quarter safety and an 18-yard touchdown pass from Zach Congalton to Joseph Flannigan on OCC's next possession of the ball.
Congalton threw for 252 yards on 31-of-51 passing, but four interceptions proved costly for the OCC offense against a tough Rustler squad. Flannigan was the top pass-catcher for the Pirates with nine receptions for 99 yards and the aforementioned touchdown. Isaiah Esquibel had another solid receiving game with seven grabs for 67 yards. On defense, Coast was led by Tobey Lau with six total tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss.
FOR THE VIKINGS -- Long Beach saw its three-game win streak come to an end last week with a 54-27 loss to East Los Angeles. Will Madonna struggled to get into the groove against the Huskies, completing just 18-of-41 passes for 192 yards and two interceptions. Top running back was Konyae Hunter, who rushed for 50 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 14 carries. Ten different Viking players caught passes on Saturday, including Kyle Miller, who led the way with seven receptions for 58 yards. Defensive leaders for the Vikings on Saturday were Austin Bressler with seven tackles, while Richard Abrego, Jamarlo Campbell, Isiah Watson, Trevor Cook and Jagger MosQueda each had five tackles.
NEXT WEEK -- The Pirates will take to the road and will face Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday, Oct. 28, beginning at 6 p.m.
