Pirates fight hard, but come up short to Owls

COSTA MESA -- It was a hard-fought battle and the Orange Coast College football team competed all the way to the end, but the Pirates came up just short to visiting Citrus College, 38-22, on Saturday night inside LeBard Stadium.

In what's been a rough season, the Pirates played one of their best all-around games of the season and hung tough with the Owls through all four quarters.

Zach Congalton had a hand in all three OCC touchdowns, throwing for a TD to go along with 207 passing yards on 27-of-46 passing. The freshman QB also ran for 65 yards and two TDs on 10 carries, including a 49-yard run to the end zone.

Zyun McGee caught seven passes for 63 yards, while Joseph Flannigan caught eight passes for 48 yards and a touchdown.

Coast fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter before Congalton's 49-yard TD run cut the lead in half with 1:49 remaining in the opening frame.

The Pirate defense clamped down and held Citrus to just one TD in the second quarter and the Pirates trailed 21-7 at the half.

After a short field goal by the Owls early in the third, OCC trimmed the Citrus lead to just 10 with a 6-yard TD run by Congalton, making it 24-14 with 5:52 left in the third.

But a pair of Citrus TDs put an end to some late-game drama before the Pirates closed out the scoring with a 5-yard TD pass from Congalton to Flannigan and a 2-point conversion by the same duo.

Coast will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at San Bernardino Valley College, beginning at 1 p.m.
