Pirates come up short against Hornets

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team hung tough with one of the top teams in the state, but in the end, the Fullerton College Hornets were too much for the Pirates in a 99-80 loss on Monday night inside the Peterson Gym.

OCC (10-6, 2-2 in the Orange Empire Conference) played the majority of the game without one of its top players, sophomore guard and leading scorer Jydon Hall, who battled with foul trouble right from the opening minute of play. With Hall sidelined for all but seven minutes of play, the Pirates did their best to keep up with the state's top-ranked team (16-1, 5-0).

Logen Howard led the Pirates with 17 points, while Noah Simmons and Trent Williams each added 13 points and Josh Lee dropped in 10. For the Hornets, Kobe Newton led the way with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Javon Jones added 19 points, Jeremiah Davis contributed 17 points, Shaquil Bender tossed in 15 points and R.J. Banks knocked down 11 points.

Fullerton jumped out of the gates early and in addition to two quick fouls by Hall in the first two minutes, the Hornets opened things with a 13-1 run, putting OCC behind the 8-ball early.

Coast trailed by 22 late in the first half, but used its relentless defense and some key baskets to get as close as 12 (54-42) early in the second half.

But the Hornets had too many weapons and they managed to stay poised during the Pirate press defense and never let their lead fall below 10 the entire second half.

OCC will play at Saddleback on Wednesday (5 p.m.) before returning to the Peterson Gym on Friday against rival Golden West, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday's game will be a "WHITE OUT" game, so come to the game dressed in white in support of the Pirates!
