Pirates win 3-of-4 races over UCLA

NEWPORT BEACH -- The Orange Coast College men's crew opened the 2013 season in strong fashion, topping UCLA in three-of-four races on Saturday under ideal conditions inside the Newport Harbor.

The highlight of the morning came in the men's Varsity 8 race, where the Pirates and Bruins went head-to-head for the entire 2,000-meter race. Finally, down the stretch, it was the host Pirates who touched the finish line first with a winning time of 5 minutes, 54 seconds, just one SECOND ahead of the runner-up Bruins (5:55).

In the second Varsity 8 race, the Bruins won with a time of 6:15, just seven seconds ahead of the Pirates (6:22).

In the Frosh/Novice 8 race, the Pirates used a strong performance to post a time of 6:05, 27 seconds ahead of the UCLA's 6:32.

And, in the second Frosh/Novice 8 race, the depth of the Pirates was on display as the OCC A team won with a time of 6:23, while the OCC B team placed second (6:43). UCLA clocked in third with a time of 7:05.

The Pirates will return to the waters of the Newport Harbor on Sunday, beginning at 7 a.m. as they host their biggest event of the season -- the 2013 Newport Invitational Regatta.
