Men's Crew continues strong season with impressive showing at Crew Classic

MISSION BAY -- The results and the times were impressive for the Orange Coast College men's crew as the Pirates picked up four top-five times (including one wire-to-wire win) at the 2018 San Diego Crew Classic.

The Varsity 8 reached the finals with a strong preliminary race and notched the top time in the finals among all of the West Coast schools, clocking in with a time of 6 minutes, 26.73 seconds, which was good enough for third place overall behind only Temple University (6:17.85) and the University of British Columbia (6:21.09).

In the Novice 8 race, Coast finished runner-up in the finals to Cal and 20 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. The Golden Bears crossed the line first with a time of 6:30.77, while the Pirates came in at 6:47.81, while UCLA (7:06.82) finished a distant third.

The Second Varsity 8 notched a solid fifth-place time of 6:51.19 and was just two seconds behind fellow ACRA member, UC Santa Barbara in the race.

OCC's big win of the event came in the Second Novice 8 race, where the Pirates led from wire to wire in the finals and clocked in with a time of 7:05.44, a full 19 seconds better than runner-up USCB's time of 7:24.80.

The Pirates will now head up to the UCLA Classic in Marina Del Rey on Saturday, beginning at 7 a.m.
