Pirates snap slide with 4-0 win over Cypress

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's soccer team snapped a modest two-game losing streak with a convincing 4-0 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Cypress on Tuesday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

Peter Marquez had a pair of goals, while Colton Goodness chipped in three assists for the Pirates (4-6-1, 3-2-0 in OEC). Abraham Cortes and Jack Slavik also contributed goals for Coast, while Curtis Taniguchi added an assist.

It didn't take long for Coast to jump ahead of the Chargers (3-8-1, 1-4-0) as Goodness slipped a nice pass to Marquez, who outran the Cypress defense and slipped a shot past Chargers' goalkeeper Austin Cummins in the fifth minute.

Marquez again scored -- this time off a Taniguchi assist -- in the 34th minute to make it 2-0 as the Pirates outshot Cypress 8-3 in the first half and 14-6 for the match.

Coast tacked on a pair of goals late in the second half to blow the contest open. Goodness found Cortes with a lead pass and the sophomore midfielder used several nice 1-on-1 moves to work around the defense and beat backup goalie Mohammad Zargaran (six saves) to make it 3-0 in the 82nd minute.

Finally, in the final minute of regulation, Goodness found Slavik with a nice pass and the freshman forward made no mistake to close out the Pirates' scoring.

OCC goalkeeper Ryan Brown enjoyed a less-than-stressful afternoon and notched four saves to pick up the shutout win.

The Pirates to play at Golden West on Friday (3 p.m.) to begin a crucial three-game road stretch. OCC's next home match will be on Tuesday, Oct. 27 against Norco (3 p.m.).
