Rough second half dooms Pirates in loss to Rustlers

Rough second half dooms Pirates in loss to Rustlers

COSTA MESA -- It was a tale of two halves for the Orange Coast College men's soccer team as the Pirates fell to visiting Golden West, 4-2, on Tuesday in an Orange Empire Conference matchup on Halloween at the OCC Soccer Complex.

The first half of play had the Pirates feeling like their pillow cases were filled with nothing but full-sized bags of name-brand candy bars as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead and carried a 2-1 advantage into halftime. Coast carried the play to the Rustlers for the majority of the 45-minute first half. It was 1-0 less than 2 minutes into play as Steven Garcia fed a nice pass to teammate Brady Powell, who headed the loose ball into the back of the net.

Golden West scored in the 15th minute, but less than 2 minutes after that, Daichi Someya picked the pocket clean of a GWC defender and found Grayson Marquez, who buried his shot into the net, putting the Pirates ahead, 2-1.

But, the second half of soccer was more of a candy collection of tiny Tootsie Rolls, a random apple, candy corn and un-identified pieces of taffy for the Pirates in the second half as the Rustlers turned the momentum over to their side with three second-half goals to pull out the win.

Adam Guillen had three saves for the Pirates in goal, while Daniel Barragan picked up five for the Rustlers.

OCC will wrap up its home schedule on Friday against Saddleback College, beginning at 3 p.m.
