Coast men take third overall at OEC Championships

RIVERSIDE -- Several top-three performances helped lead the Orange Coast College men's swim team to a third-place team result at last weekend's Orange Empire Conference Swimming/Diving Championships, held at Riverside City College.

Coast completed the three-day event with a team score of 616.50 points, topped only by Golden West (789.50) and Riverside City College (661.50).

In the individual races, Cory Nguyen led the way for OCC, earning three second-place marks in the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.56), the 200 individual medley (2nd, 1:56.14) and the 100 backstroke (52.44).

Tyler Connors also kept himself busy for the Pirates, earning a pair of third-place marks in the 200 backstroke (1:56.29) and 100 backstroke (53.26) as well as a fourth-place time in the 200 IM (1:58.44).

Alexander Cargill earned himself the bronze medal in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.93, while teammate Jacob Ousten earned the same spot in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.15.

The Pirates earned the majority of their point total with five top-three times in their relay events.

In the 200 medley relay, the OCC foursome of Connors, Cargill, Derek Price and Alex Furlong earned a second-place time of 1:36.8.

Another runner-up time for Coast came in the 400 medley relay as the quartet of Connors, Cargill, Joshua Meza and Josh Hayashi hit the wall with a time of 3:32.26.

Coast earned third-place marks in the 400 free relay (Nguyen, Hayashi, Connors, Fulong -- 3:10.38), the 800 free relay (Nguyen, Hayashi, Connors, Kyle Bogel), 7:08.63) and the 200 free relay (Price, Nguyen, Furlong, Hayashi -- 1:26.33).

Up next for the Pirates is a trip to East L.A. College for the 2015 California Community College Athletic Association State Swimming/Diving Championships, set for April 30-May 2.
