Pirate men take seventh place at state swim finals

LOS ANGELES -- The Orange Coast College men's swim team wrapped up the 2015 season with a seventh-place team score of 205 points at last weekend's California Community College Athletic Association State Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by East Los Angeles College.

On the individual side, OCC's Cory Nguyen earned a fifth-place performance in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall with a time of 52.36 seconds.

Tylor Connors took on the state's best in the 200 backstroke and finished sixth overall with a time of 1:53.61, while in the 1,650 freestyle, Kyle Bogel showed off his endurance with a seventh-place time of 16:38.84.

Coast also advanced to the final in four different relay events -- the 200 free relay, the 200 medley relay, the 400 free relay and the 800 free relay.

In the 200 free relay, the foursome of Nguyen, Alex Furlong, Josh Hayashi and Derek Price earned the top team finish for Coast, placing fifth with a time of 1:25.81.

Nguyen, Hayashi, Furlong and Connors placed sixth in the 400 free relay (3:09), while Nguyen, Hayashi, Bogel and Connors placed sixth in the 800 free relay (7:00.92).

In the 200 medley relay, Connors, Price, Furlong and Alexander Cargill placed eighth overall with a time of 1:36.13.
