Young qualifies for State Decathlon after strong showing at SoCal Regionals

TORRANCE -- It was another strong performance for Orange Coast College decathlete, Tyler Young and his efforts earned him a trip to state after his strong showing at the Southern California Regional Multi-Event Championship on Wednesday afternoon at El Camino College.

With a top-six finish needed to qualify for the CCCAA State Meet, Young did what he had to do and earned a runner-up score of 5,967 points, trailing only Mt. San Antonio's Max Daniels, who finished with 6,138 points.

Young earned a first-place time of 15.68 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and also finished in the top-three in the Javelin throw (3rd, 145-feet, 6 1/2 inches) and pole vault (2nd, 13-5 1/2).

Fellow Pirate, Cody LaClaire, also performed well and finished 10th overall with 3,250 points.

On the women's side, OCC's top heptathlete, Verna Malo, finished 12th overall with 3,213. Malo's top event came in the javelin throw, where she finished sixth with a throw of 94-9 1/2.

The CCCAA State Meet will take place May 20-21 at Mt. San Antonio College.
