Pirates qualify five for multi-event competition

FULLERTON -- The Orange Coast College men's and women's track and field teams will be well represented at the upcoming Southern California Regionals for the heptathlon and decathlon as five Pirates qualified with solid performances at the Orange Empire Conference multi-event championships, hosted by Fullerton College.

On the women's side, the trio of Katelyn Muniz, Annabelle Low and Kimberly Renteria finished second, third and fourth, respectively for the Pirates, each earning spots in the upcoming Southern California Regional Championships on April 4-5.

Muniz was just edged out be GWC's Emily Nguyen for the top spot and finished with 3,396 points, just 87 behind Nguyen. Low was close behind her Pirate teammate with 3,247 points, while Renteria placed fourth with 2,329 points.

It was a 1-2-3 finish for the Pirates in the 100-meter hurdles as Muniz (16.76), Low (18.24) and Renteria (19.04) led the Pirate brigade in that event. Muniz also placed first in the 200 with a winning time of 27.06, while Low took the fastest time in the 800 (2:34.49), just ahead of Muniz, who took second at 2:40.25.

Over on the men's side, a pair of Pirates -- Cayden Loth and Gavin Meyer -- earned spots at the upcoming SoCal Regionals with a pair of top-three final scores in the decathlon. Loth finished second overall with 5,533 points, while Meyer took third with 5,113 points.

It was a 1-2 finish in the shot put for Meyer and Loth, with Meyer with the top throw at 37-feet, 8 3/4 inches, while Loth was second at 35-10 1/2.

It was more of the same for this Pirate duo in the discus, with Meyer taking the top spot at 98-8, with Loth close behind at 97-1.

Loth took first ahead of his Pirate teammate in the pole vault, clearing 11-5 3/4, while Meyer took the silver with a mark of 10-2.

Loth also had a trio of runner-up times in the 100 (11.45), 400 (53.53) and 110 hurdles (16.99) as well as a second-place mark in the long jump (19-9), while Meyer took runner-up in the javelin throw with a toss of 145-10.
