Pirates topple Lasers in four

IRVINE -- Part One of this week's men's volleyball showdown between Orange Coast College and Irvine Valley College fell on the side of the visiting Pirates in a four-set thriller on Wednesday night.

After dropping the first set, the Pirates turned on the jets and dispatched the Lasers over the next three sets en route to a 22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 29-27 win. The victory kept the Pirates undefeated in 2021 with a record of 6-0 overall and in the Orange Empire Conference, while the Lasers drop to 6-1 overall, 5-1 in the OEC.

IVC, which entered Wednesday's matchup without surrendering a single set this year, kept that streak going with a 25-22 win in the opening set.

But from there, Coast came up with the big points down the stretch to give the Lasers their first defeat of the season.

Calvin Sanborn led the way for Coast with a season-high 21 kills (.372 hitting percentage), while teammate Caden Satterfield added 16 kills on a .520 hitting average). Eric Beebe dished out 30 assists to go along with four total blocks, while Cole Tran added a career-best 15 digs.

On the right side, Carter Depue played a solid, all-around match with nine kills and 10 digs.

For the Lasers, Colin Chillingworth led the way with 18 kills.

Both teams will meet again on Friday night at OCC, beginning at 6 p.m. No spectators will be allowed, but the match will be shown on the Pirates' YouTube page, located HERE.
