Pirates finish fifth at GWC Tournament
HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team finished 3-1 this past weekend and took fifth place in the 16-team, Golden West College Tournament.
Coast (18-4 overall), ranked No. 4 in the state, opened its tourney action with an 8-7 win over Grossmont on Friday, but fell later in the afternoon to second-ranked Long Beach City College, 14-7.
On Saturday, the Pirates took on No. 5 West Valley and pulled out a 12-11 win. Scott Brush led OCC with three goals, while Tony Morelli, Gavin Wright and Austin Wing each chipped in two goals.
The win pushed Coast into the fifth-place finals against Cuesta College and the Pirates prevailed, 8-6. The Pirates trailed 5-2 at the half, but outscored the Cougars, 6-1 in the second half for the win.
Charles Howarth had three goals to lead Coast, while Wright added a pair of goals in the win.
The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday at Santa Ana College, beginning at 4 p.m.
