Strong start propels Pirates past Tigers, 14-6

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team kicked off Orange Empire Conference play with a bang as the Pirates rolled past visiting Riverside City College, 14-6, on Wednesday at the OCC Aquatics Pavilion.

Dane Howell led the Pirates (4-2, 1-0 in conference) with four goals, three assists and three steals, while Kyle Jolas added three goals, two assists and two blocks. Ethan Pranajaya chipped in two goals, while solo tallies were turned in by Joshua Edwards, Toby Jones, Caden Carpenter, Bronson Garel and Ethan Igloi

In goal, Benjamin Matz played the first three quarters and allowed just three goals on seven saves, while in the fourth, Henry Szczuka handled a busy eight minutes of work with seven saves of his own.

Riverside (4-5, 2-1) hung around for the early parts of the contest before a 6-0 run by the Pirates turned a 5-2 lead into an 11-2 blowout. From there OCC kept the Tigers at bay and were never threatened the rest of the match.

Coast will return to action at the Cerritos Mini-Tournament on Friday against Citrus College, beginning at 12:30 p.m. OCC's next home match will be on Wednesday against Santa Ana, beginning at 3 p.m.
