Pirates pull off solid road win at Chapman University, 13-9

ORANGE -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team added an impressive win to their resume by knocking off Chapman, 13-9, on Saturday in a nonconference matchup at Chapman University.

The Pirates (13-10) matched the four-year Panthers (10-12) shot for shot in the first half and carried a 6-5 lead into the break. From there, Coast turned up the defensive pressure and held Chapman to just one goal over the first 11 minutes of the second half. During that run, Coast scored six of the next seven goals to carry a 12-6 advantage. Chapman ended the contest with a mini 3-1 run but it was too little, too late.

Jacob Muller had three goals and an assist for OCC, while Ethan Pranajaya added two goals, four assists, three steals and a block. Ethan Rose and Nathan Jones each tossed in two goals, while single tallies were turned in by Kendrick Griffith, Julian Cassel-Comet (five assists), Ryan O'Donovan and Nathan Jones.

Anchoring the defense for the Pirates was goalie Benjamin Matz, who held the Panthers to just nine goals with 12 big saves.

The win will give the Pirates some extra momentum heading into the Orange Empire Conference Championships, where they will open as the No. 3 seed. They open things on Friday against No. 6 Fullerton, beginning at 10:20 a.m. at Riverside City College.
