Pirate men capture GWC Invitational

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Highlighted by three top-10 performances, the Orange Coast College men's cross country team took home the top spot at the 2019 Golden West College Invitational on Friday at Central Park.

Taking on a top field and a demanding 4-mile course, the Pirates topped the 14-team field with a team score of 47 points, followed by Riverside (75), Mt. San Antonio (118), Fullerton (140) and Bakersfield (144).

The future is bright for the OCC runners as all five-point producing runners are freshman, including third-place finisher Tyler Savely, who finished with a score of 21 minutes, 30.1 seconds. Close behind was fellow freshman Brian Soriano-Guzman, who placed fifth at 21:39.6, while teammate Yuki Watanabe joined Savely and Soriano-Guzman in the top 10 with a seventh-place time of 21:42.8.

Fellow first-year runners Andrew Lopez (12th, 21:59.8) and Peter Antunez (21st, 22:28.2) showed the depth of the Pirate squad en route to the team victory.

Other top OCC performances were turned in by Justin Dominguez (22:40.5), Joseph Pena (23:17.2), Adam Angel (23:19.4), Kevin Carrera (24:40.4), Anthony Osorio (25:17), Jacob Skytte (25:17), Gavin McNeill (25.47.3), Mateo Nicanor (25:54.2), Rhamseys Garcia (26:46.7), Edward Ramirez (28:58.4), Israel Delibrado (31:51.1) and Ernesto Zepeda (31:55.4).

The Pirates return to action on Friday, Oct. 4 at the Cerritos Invitational, located at Don Knabe Regional Park, beginning at 10 a.m.
