Dominguez, Pirates capture Vanguard Invitational

ORANGE -- Led by freshman Jimmy Dominguez, the Orange Coast College men's cross country team opened the 2023 season in style, winning the 2023 Vanguard University Invitational on Friday at Irvine Regional Park.

As a team, the Pirates came out strong for their first race of the season and won the Vanguard Invitational with 31 points, followed by Hope International (46 points) and the host Lions (52 points).

Dominguez led for the majority of the 8K race against two- and four-year colleges and pulled away from the pack in the second half of the race en route to a winning time of 26 minutes, 36 seconds, over 17 seconds faster than the runner-up of the race, Hope International University's Ricardo Cruz (26:53.78).

Coast had three of its runners finish in the top-10. Joining Dominguez on that list was freshman Carlos Ramos, who placed fifth overall with a time of 27:30.94, with sophomore teammate Viencent Luong-Kha in sixth with a time of 27:43.6.

Other top performances for the Pirates included William Spangler (28:35.78), Don Molina (28:42.94), Lance Copp (29:03.3), Farhaan Safi (29:42.66), Caden Guardino (29:43.78), Damian Martinez (30:45.34), Emiliano Gonzalez (32:10.58) and Kevin Rivas (35:49.61).

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at the Biola Invitational, located at Craig Regional Park, beginning at 8 a.m.
