Pirates drop conference opener to Cypress

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College softball team came out strong against visiting Cypress College, but cooled off late in the chilly conditions at the OCC Softball Complex and fell, 14-9, on Wednesday afternoon.

Things looked promising early on as the Pirates (1-5, 0-1 in the Orange Empire Conference) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, but Coast couldn't deliver the early knockout the Chargers (6-1) made them pay for it, scoring 14 runs over the next five innings.

Cypress starter Kaitlyn Reynolds picked up the win and also helped her own cause at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.

The loss spoiled a solid day at the plate for OCC catcher Lydia Gonzalez, who went 2-for-4 with a run and five RBI, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the first, a single, an error and a walk loaded the bases for Gonzalez, who collected her first two RBI of the game with a single down the left-field line, putting Coast up 2-0. Emilie Lapena followed with a run-scoring single of her own, putting OCC up 3-0. But with first and second and only one out, that would be the end of the scoring in the first as Cypress used a line out and bases-loaded ground out to end the threat.

Coast loaded the bases with nobody out in the second with three straight singles, but only a run-scoring fielder's choice by Gonzalez would produce a run in that frame for the Pirates. T

The Pirates will return to action on Monday at Pasadena City College, beginning at 2:30 p.m. OCC's next home game will be on Wednesday against Saddleback, beginning at 2 p.m.
