Chavez's walkoff home run delivers a win for Pirates!

COSTA MESA -- Leila Chavez ripped a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Orange Coast College softball team a walkoff win as the Pirates topped San Bernardino Valley, 8-7, on Tuesday in a nonconference matchup at the OCC Softball Complex.

After watching a 6-2 lead evaporate over the final innings, Chavez came through for the Pirates (10-16) against the Wolverines (13-15). Chavez was the hot hitter for Coast, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Taylor Andolsek added two hits and two runs scored, while Isabel McElroy went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

It was a heart-stopping seventh inning for both ball clubs in this back-and-forth matchup. Leading 6-5, the Pirates tried to hang on, but a run-scoring squeeze bunt and a run-scoring wild pitch helped propel the Wolverines ahead of the Pirates, 7-6.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Andolsek started the rally with a single to left before Chavez emptied the Pirate bench with a game-winning, two-run shot over the center-field fence.

The Pirates will return to Orange Empire Conference action on Wednesday at home against Saddleback College, beginning at 2 p.m.
