Pirates roll to 77-55 win over Panthers

COSTA MESA -- Another well-balanced offensive performance turned in by the Orange Coast College women's basketball team as the Pirates toppled the visiting Chaffey College Panthers, 77-55, on Tuesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Four Pirates -- Karina Cabrera, Alexis Legan, Kyoka Ohara and Annie Trinh -- each found double digits on the stat sheet as the Pirates used a dominating second quarter of play to blow the game wide open.

Leading 13-11, the Pirates went to work and outscored the Panthers (2-5) by 17 in the second quarter (27-10) and carried a 40-21 lead into the locker room at halftime. Coast was 9-of-17 from the floor in that quarter, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 from the foul like. Meanwhile, Chaffey went 3-of-10 from the floor, 0-2 from 3-point land and 4-for-11 from the free-throw line over that same span.

The Panthers tried to claw back and got to within 11 at 43-32 before a clutch 3-pointer by Trinh, pushed the lead back up to 14 and the Pirates cruised from there.

It was the second impressive performance in a row by the Pirates, who improve to 2-1 for the season. Cabrera led all scorers with 18 points. Legan added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Ohara nearly pulled off a triple-double and settled for 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Trinh came off the bench and hit three 3-pointers on her way to 12 points and three assists.

Trinity Walker led Chaffey with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Brianna Medrano added 14 points and seven boards.

The bigger Pirates controlled the game on the glass, out-rebounding Chaffey 55-39 in the game.

From here, Coast will take to the road and compete in the San Diego City College Tournament, starting on Thursday against Cuyamaca at 12 p.m.
