Pirates win rough one over Rustlers

COSTA MESA -- Both women's basketball teams from Orange Coast and Golden West colleges were in "foul" moods during Friday's rivalry matchup inside the Peterson Gym, but in the end, the Pirates prevailed with a 59-47 Orange Empire Conference win over the visiting Rustlers.

In a contest that "featured" 57 combined fouls and more starts and stops than the 405 Freeway at rush hour, the Pirates (17-7, 6-2 in the OEC) did what they had to do to pick up the win against the Rustlers (12-10, 1-7).

After a slow start, OCC standout Annie Trinh came alive in the second half and finished the game with a team-high 26 points. The freshman guard was held to just six points through the first two quarters before scoring 10 points in the third and fourth quarters to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists. Trinh made up a rough night of 3-point shooting with quality at the free-throw line, hitting 13-of-16 from the charity stripe.

Karina Cabrera added 14 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Karissa Chvilicek added seven points and 12 rebounds.

Thanks to a plethora of fouls from the Rustlers -- 37 for the game -- the Pirates feasted from the free-throw line, where they outscored GWC, 34-11.

As the conference winds down, Coast is currently sitting in second place, but with another long week of games planned due to earlier COVID postponements, anything is possible for the top few teams in the OEC.

Both teams go at it again on Monday afternon at GWC, beginning at 3 p.m.
