Pirates off to 4-0 start with win over Southwestern

MOORPARK -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team has some lofty goals heading into this upcoming season and through four games and four wins, the Pirates are on the right path.

OCC's most recent victory came on Saturday on the final day of the Moorpark College Tournament as the Pirates rolled past Southwestern, 80-59.

Meghan McIntyre led the Pirates with 24 points, seven rebounds, 10 assists and five steals, while Karina Cabrera added 19 points and four steals. Savannah Seiler tossed in 14 points and eight rebounds, while the OCC defense kept up its strong play with 15 forced turnovers.

The Pirates opened the season with a ragged shooting night from 3-point range, but still pulled off a 54-42 win over San Diego Mesa. Coast shot an icy 2-of-23 from downtown, but used a strong defensive effort to hold the Olympians to just 42 points. McIntyre led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Gabby Samiy added 11 points and seven boards.

The shooting returned to proper form in OCC's second contest of the season as the Pirates rolled to a 97-59 win over L.A. Trade Tech on Thursday. Coast was unconscious from 3-point range, hitting 19-of-37 from downtown (51.4%), led by Annie Trinh, who was 7-of-10 from 3-point range and led the offensive barrage with 25 points. Cabrera was close behind with 21 points (6-of-12 on 3's) and McIntyre tossed in 20 points with seven rebounds and seven assists.

OCC's biggest challenge came on Friday when the Pirates took on the preseason's No. 3-ranked Moorpark College Raiders on their home court and promptly rolled to a 65-49 win. Coast used strong first (20-13) and third (11-4) quarters to pull away from the Raiders, as McIntyre rolled to a 22-point, 10-rebounds performance. Cabrera added 13 points- and five assists, while Samiy added 10 points and six rebounds.

Another tough challenge awaits the Pirates as they travel to Mt. San Antonio College to take on Southern California's No. 2-ranked Mounties on Wednesday, beginning at 7 p.m.
