Pirates wrap up perfect road run with 78-52 win over Monarchs

VALLEY GLEN -- It would appear that the next women's basketball poll is gonna have some major changes during the next cycle as the Orange Coast College women's basketball team played six games, on the road, against five ranked opponents, and went a perfect 6-0.

The sixth-and-final victory came for the Pirates on Saturday against 13th-ranked L.A. Valley and there, the Pirates jumped ahead early and cruised to a 78-52 win over the Monarchs.

The win streak for the Pirates has been impressive to say the least. Among the victories on this road run include No. 2 Mt. San Antonio (60-52), No. 3 Moorpark (65-49), No. 11 L.A. Trade Tech (97-59), No. 13 LAVC (78-52) and No. 27 Southwestern (80-59).

Against the Monarchs, it was the same recipe for success ... steady offense and a relentless team defense. Meghan McIntyre led the way with 23 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, while Gabby Samiy had her best game of the season, added 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Karina Cabrera tossed in 10 points and Savannah Seiler helped with the dirty work and joined Samiy with 10 rebounds.

For the Monarchs, Princess Byrd came off the bench and provided 17 points and seven rebounds, while Jacqueline Privado added 10 points.

It started early and often for the Pirates as they jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and played a steady, sound brand of basketball for the remainder of the first quarter to lead 21-11.

The impressive play continued through the second quarter as the Pirates saw it's 10-point advantage double by the end of the first half as Coast led, 41-21 at the break.

LAVC pushed back a bit in the third and outscored Coast, 21-14 in the third and trailed 55-42, but a 10-3 OCC run to open the fourth ended any chances of a Monarch rally as the Pirates cruised to victory from there.

Through the first six games, McIntyre has been on fire, averaging 23.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 3.5 steals per game. As a team, OCC is averaging 72.3 points per game, while holding its opposition to 52.2 points per game.

Coast will enjoy some holiday rest before finally having its home opener on Friday, Dec. 2 against Glendale in the OCC Crossover, beginning at 7 p.m.
