Pirates capture two big wins at Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO -- The Orange Coast College women's crew headed to San Diego for the prestigious Crew Classic down at Mission Bay and the Pirates came home with some impressive hardware, winning a pair of races in the novice and varsity levels.

In the Varsity 4 race, the Pirate foursome of Lauren Koerner, Emma Hallums, Sarah Chiaromonte, Julia Dervieux and coxswain Isabella Sendowsky jumped out fast and won with opener between them and the competition. Coast crossed the finish line first with a time of 8 minutes, 24.72 seconds, followed by Pacific Lutheran (9:07.73) and the University of Colorado (9:20.03).

For the Novice 8 race, it was more of the same success for the Pirates, as they, too, put open-water distance ahead of themselves and the rest of the field. The boat, led by Isabella Lluncor, Katherine Luu, Jovana Hester, Nagisa Kudo, Logan Presho, Devin Morrison, Mya Zepeda, Savannah Sennott and coxswain Christian Cristobal took the top time with a 7:53, 26 ... the lone boat in the race to finish in under 8 minutes. UC Santa Barbara (8;18.33) was a distant second, followed by UC Davis (8:22.50), Colorado (8:38.57) and UCSB "B" (9:20.07).

The Pirates will return to the familiar waters of the Newport Harbor and prepare for the 2023 Collins Cup, which takes place on Saturday, April 15, beginning at 7 a.m.
