Late goals doom Pirates, 3-0

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team did everything possible to keep powerhouse Santiago Canyon out of the back of the net, but three late second-half goals spoiled the hard work as the Pirates fell to the Hawks, 3-0, on Friday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

The third-ranked (state) Hawks (14-1-1, 9-0-1 in Orange Empire Conference) maintained pressure on the Pirates (11-5-2, 4-5-1) throughout the first half, but some early saves by Jessica Gardner (10 saves) and some steady play by the OCC defense kept the match scoreless through the first 45 minutes. Coast's best chance to score came late in the half on a free-kick opportunity, but the shot ended up in the arms of SCC goalkeeper Savanna Prado (three saves).

Finally, in the 59th minute of play, SCC scored on a goal from Sheila Sanchez and the Hawks added tallies from Elyse Valenzuela (67th minute) and Megan Llopis (90th minute).

Coast will return to action on Tuesday at Santa Ana (3 p.m.) before returning to the OCC Soccer Complex to host Fullerton College on Friday (3 p.m.).
