Pirate swimmers win Scholar Team Award

COSTA MESA -- The 2012 state champion Orange Coast College women's swim team also excelled outside the pool as well and the California Community College Athletic Association recognized their achievements with the 2012 Scholar Team Award.

The Scholar Team Award is the highest academic team achievement given annually by the CCCAA. According to the CCCAA Web site, "all team members must have excelled academically with a total grade point average of 3.0 or higher and the team should have demonstrated better than average accomplishments in intercollegiate athletic competition. "

Last year's state champs posted a team GPA of 3.05 to win the award. The winners, along with the rest of the annual honor roll, are selected by the CCCAA Awards Committee from nominations made by community colleges throughout California.

The OCC women's swim team topped the field, winning the state championship for the third year in a row at last year's State Meet.

The 2012 women's swim team consists of Shavonne Abella, Mackenzie Bailie, Megan Barnett, Nicole Burns, Belen Cairo, Renee Chang, Erika Dowell, Brehz Dulac, Noelle Elliot, Shelby Elmore, Hatchi Hulka, Alyssa Katreeb, Coral Keller, Starlene Lara, Denise Mejia, Kristen Peters, Cailend Robbins, Jenna Rudy, Alyssa Schrader, Madison Seaberry, Cherokee Stephens and Nicole Buck.
