Weins, Aguilar help lead Pirates to top spot at PCC Invitational

PASADENA -- With eight individual and relay wins, the Orange Coast College women's swim team took home first place at the 2016 Pasadena Invitational, held at Pasadena City College, this past weekend.

The Pirates finished with 851 points for the top prize, while Santa Barbara (557 points) finished second overall and Golden West (358 points) took third overall.

Standout swimmer Lauren Weins did her part, and then some, leading the Pirates to the team win with three individual titles and three relay victories. 

Weins, along with Alexa Clayfield, helped the Pirates finish 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke. Weins touched the wall first with a time of 59.09 seconds, with Clayfield close behind with a time of 59.62.

It was the first of FOUR 1-2 finishes for the Pirates as Weins and Clayfield again took first and second in the 200 backstroke with Weins winning with a time of 2:09.63, just ahead of Clayfield's time of 2:17.02.

In the 200 butterfly, Weins claimed her third individual victory with a time of 2:14.81, while teammate Lexi Hill finished second with a time of 2:18.43.

Weins, Hill, Hannah Veseth and Sierra Cox took on all comers in the 400 medley relay and the foursome took home the top spot with a time of 4:02.89. Coast also won the 200 medley relay with a pool/meet record time of 1:49.37 (names were not made available).

Another strong all-around performance was turned in by Rebecca Aguilar, who also turned in three individual first-place times. In the 50 free, Aguilar set the pace and touched the wall first with a time of 24.21 seconds. She followed that up with a victory in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.18 seconds, followed by teammate Hill, who finished second with a time of 1:00.46.

Finally, in the 100 freestyle, Aguilar cleared the field and won with a time of 53.35 seconds.

Aguilar also was a part of the victorious 400 freestyle relay team, joining, Cox, Clayfield and Nacinda Paap with a winning time of 3:38.54.

Paap, Weins, Clayfield and Aguilar also dominated the competition in the 800 free relay with a winning time of 8:00.6.

Clayfield, Paap, Veseth and Aguilar placed second overall in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:40.15. In the 400 medley relay, Paap, Iman Bourdi, Morgan Goodson and Sini White took third with a time of 4:17.02.

Other top-three performances were turned in by Cox in the 500 free (3rd, 5:21.52) and 1,650 free (3rd, 18:54.74), Clayfield in the 200 individual medley (2nd, 2:12.73), Weins in the 200 IM (3rd, 2:13.99), Paap in the 200 breaststroke (2nd, 1:09.31) and Veseth in the 200 breaststroke (3rd, 1:09.81) and 200 breaststroke (3rd, 2:37.38).

The Pirates will return to the water on April 21 as they take part in the Orange Empire Conference Championships, hosted by Fullerton College, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
