Pirates split with Rustlers, Hornets in OEC tri-meet

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College women's track and field team went 1-1 in Friday's tri-meet with host Golden West and visiting Fullerton. Coast topped the Rustlers, 91-56, but came up just short against the Hornets, 70-66.

Freshman Michelle Morgan picked up a pair of wins for the Pirates, edging a pair of Fullerton runners to take first in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 36.43 seconds. Morgan also pulled away from the field in the 1,500 to win with a time of 5:21.56.

Freshman sprinter Sophia Johnson turned on the jets to take home the fastest time in the 100 with a time of 13.73.

In the 3,000, sophomore Elizabeth Diaz Cortes cruised to victory with a solid time of 12:33.24, while in the 400 hurdles, Precious Kilburg picked up the fastest time of the race with a 1:15.49.

In the javelin, Coast finished 1-2, thanks to the freshman duo of Raelynn Denson and Zulema Juarez. Denson came through with a winning throw of 80-feet, 5 1/2 inches, while Juarez was close behind with a second-place throw of 76-4 3/4.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at the Long Beach State Invitational, beginning at 10 a.m.
