Pirate ladies finish second at OEC Championships
FULLERTON -- The Orange Coast College women's track and field team make a strong showing at the 2023 Orange Empire Conference Track and Field Championships, finishing second overall in the finals on Friday at Fullerton College.
Coast (185 points) finished just behind OEC champion Riverside City College (276) and ahead of Saddleback (108), Golden West (89) and Fullerton (69).
In addition to several top-three performances, the Pirates picked up OEC titles in four different events.
In the 400-meter relay, the OCC foursome of Mallory Jackson, Katelyn Muniz, Emili Ilfeld and Yasamin Zand edged out the Tigers at the finish line and took home the conference title with a time of 49.07 seconds, just ahed of RCC's time of 49.17.
Muniz had herself a busy Friday, taking first in the 400 hurdles (1:08.67), second in the 100 hurdles (16.26) and joining the 1,600 relay for a runner-up time of 4:10.52 along with Jackson, Razanne Dawood and Annabelle Low. Jackson made it a 1-2 finish for the Pirates in the 400 hurdles with a silver-medal time of 1:09.64.
Leilani Cooley grabbed the gold in the javelin throw with a mark of 100-feet, 3 1/4 inches, nearly six feet farther than runner-up Emily Nguyen of Golden West.
In the high jump, Low cleared the bar at 4-7 1/2 to take the top spot.
Other top-three performances for the Pirates include Minami Cheever in the shot put (3rd, 35-8 3/4) and discus (2nd, 122-7), Zand in the 100 (2nd, 12.13) and 200 (2nd, 26.53), Ilfeld in the 100 (3rd, 12.77), Dawood in the 400 (3rd, 1:01.15) and Cooley in the hammer throw (2nd, 137-7 1/2).

In all, several Pirates earned a trip to the Southern California Regional Meet, which kicks off with the prelims on Friday at Cerritos College, beginning at 9 a.m., with the finals set for May 12 at Cerritos, also at 9 a.m.
