Pirates conquer LBCC Invitational

COMPLETE RESULTS

TORRANCE -- The Orange Coast College women's track and field team took home the top team prize as the Pirates won first overall at the LBCC Post Meridiem Invitational this past weekend at El Camino College.

On the women's side, the Pirates racked up 131 points on the way to the meet win, followed by West L.A. College (77), Long Beach (76.50), Fullerton (59) and Glendale (50) in the 15-school field.

Leading the way for the Pirates was thrower specialist Abigail Gavrilovic, who earned three first-place marks in the hammer throw, discus and shot put.

In the shot put, Gavrilovic topped the field with a throw of 40-feet, 9-3/4 inches, topping all throwers by over 5-feet. In the hammer, Gavrilovic notched a mark of 145-5, topping everyone by 15-feet. Finally, in the discus, she threw nearly 25-feet farther than anyone else with a throw of 128-0. 

Another triple-winner for the Pirates was freshman Esmeray Demirbas, who picked up a pair of wins in the running events and a first overall in the high jump. Demirbas cleared 5-3 to win the high jump, then, won the 400-meters with a time of 57.69 and took first in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:07.99.

It was a 1-2 finish for the Pirates in the pole vault as the duo of Paitlyn Wilkins (10-8) and Kiarah Palacio (8-1 1/2) earned the gold and silver, respectively.

Other top-five performances for the Pirate women included the 400 relay foursome of Demirbas, Chloe Guerena, Lucy Penaloza and Siu Lai Wong (2nd, 51.15), Guerena in the 100 (2nd, 12.12) and 200 (2nd, 25.5), Wilkins in the javelin (2nd, 101-11), Madison Mason in the 1,500 (4th, 5:24.32) and Alexis Gilboy in the 800 (5th, 2:43.25).

Up next for the Pirates will be a trip to Azusa Pacific University for the three-day Bryan Clay Meet, which begins on Thursday at 10 a.m,
