Pirates keep rolling, defeat Lancers in three

COSTA MESA -- Six up and six down for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team as the Pirates swept past visiting Pasadena City College on Wednesday night in a nonconference matchup.

Danyelle Brown had 12 kills, while Sierra Brown added eight to lead the Pirates (6-0) to a 25-8, 25-14, 25-22 win over the Lancers (0-7).

Danielle Boyette dished out 26 assists for the Pirates, while Danyelle Brown led the defense with 14 digs, while Carina Perez added 12 and Kasse-Ann Kiriu-Dela Cruz contributed 11.

Strong serving helped jump-start the Pirates in the opening set. Three aces by Kellie Kleszcz helped get Coast out in front, 10-3. PCC chipped away and got to within five at 12-7 before the Pirates scored 13 of the next 14 points to close things out. In that 13-1 run, a pair of Kleszcz solo blocks, four kills by Sierra Brown and a pair of aces by Dela Cruz helped pave the way for OCC.

Leading 14-9 in the second set, Coast used a 7-0 run to take control of things. Another pair of Dela Cruz aces and kills by Kleszcz and Danyelle Brown helped give Coast a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Lancers continued to fight and pushed the Pirates in the third set. Trailing 15-11, PCC ripped off six points in a row to grab a 17-15 advantage before Coast closed things out with a 10-5 run.

The Pirates will open up Orange Empire Conference play on Friday at Cypress College, beginning at 7 p.m. OCC's next home match will be Friday, Oct. 10 against Fullerton, beginning at 6 p.m.
