Pirates stay unbeaten with wins over Glendale, Desert

COSTA MESA -- A long day of volleyball was a successful day for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team, as the Pirates picked up a pair of wins on Friday inside the Peterson Gym.'

In the opener, the Pirates (6-0) rolled past visiting Glendale, 25-6, 25-12, 25-13. It was quick and effective for the Pirates as they dispatched the Vaqueros in just over an hour.

Summer Hanks continued her strong hitting by the leading the offense with 17 kills. Faith Jones added nine kills, while Paige Cutwright knocked down eight.

Coast set the pace for the match right from the opening whistle, jumping out to a 16-3 lead in the first set and never looked back. For good measure, Coast ripped off nine of the next 12 points to breeze to victory in the opening set.

It was more of the same in the second set as OCC jumped out to a dominating 19-4 edge before Glendale managed to find its footing after the slow start to things.

The Vaqueros stayed a little closer in the third set and trailed only by five at 15-10, but that would be as close as the Pirates would let them get as the hitting of Jones and Brisa Zapata-Reaves carried OCC to victory over the last final points.

After a break in the second match, Coast returned to the Peterson Gym court and took on College of the Desert. Coast rolled to a pair of easy wins in the first two sets (25-13, 25-14) before stumbling in the third set (17-25) before ending the match with a 25-17 win.

Coast started off ragged in the opening set against the Roadrunners (2-3) and trailed 8-6 in the opening set. From there it was all-OCC as the Pirates outscored COD 19-5 the rest of the way en route to the opening-set victory. Jones was the pace-setter on offense with seven kills in the opening frame.

It was deja vu all over again in the second set as another rough start (6-12) washed away by a dominating 19-2 run the rest of the way. COD was its own worst enemy down the stretch as nine hitting errors during that 19-2 run were the main culprit to OCC's success.

In the third set, this slow start could NOT be overturned as the Roadrunners grabbed a 17-9 lead and never looked back. Coast pulled to within four at 17-13 before COD used a 5-1 mini-run to pull away from the Pirates.

This time there would be no slow starts as Coast jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the fourth set and never lost the lead the rest of the way. COD used an 8-1 run to pull to within a pair at 14-12, but Coast held the Roadrunners to single-point rallies the rest of the way and found 25 points first to close out the match.

Jones finished the nightcap with 16 kills. Hanks added nine kills, while Cutright contributed seven kills.

Coast will wrap up nonconference play on Tuesday at El Camino College, beginning at 6 p.m. before opening Orange Empire Conference play on Friday at home against, Fullerton College, also at 6 p.m.
