Pirates rout Rustlers in three

COSTA MESA -- The longtime women's volleyball rivalry between Orange Coast College and Golden West College didn't have much of that "epic battle" of the past years as the host Pirates rolled past the visiting Rustlers in three straight sets on Wednesday inside the Peterson Gym.

Brisa Zapata-Reaves had eight kills and 15 digs, while Natalia Brandlin added seven kills and 10 total blocks to lead the 16th-ranked Pirates past the 25th-ranked Rustlers, 25-12, 25-17, 25-14, in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.

Grace Holmgren dished out 22 assists and added eight digs, while Emily Payne came up with a team-best 20 digs for the Pirates (16-4, 9-3 in the OEC). Coast was dominant in the middle with 21 total blocks against the Rustlers (10-9, 7-6).

With the win, combined with Santa Ana's loss to Irvine Valley, the Pirates now stand alone in second place in the OEC standings, two losses behind the first-place Lasers (16-4, 12-1) and one loss ahead of the third-place Dons (15-4, 8-4). Cypress and Golden West -- each 7-6 in the OEC -- will be battling for a potential playoff spot as the season reaches the home stretch.

Coast will travel to Cypress on Friday to take on the Chargers (6 p.m.) before returning to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday to host Santa Ana (6 p.m.).
